If you’ve been reading Feasting Fort Collins long enough, you know that when it comes to event dinners, Fort Collins has pretty much done it all. There have been countless wine dinners, beer pairing dinners, farm dinners… only a handful of those events over the years stand out in my memory as real memorable and extraordinary experiences. So when something unique comes around, not only am I intrigued by the creativity that’s happening, but I am THRILLED that there’s something different to experience. I don’t know about you all, but I can’t stand being stuck in a rut; I look forward to outside-the-box experiences because they make the best stories.
That’s exactly what Lights Out is all about, and it’s why I’m excited to be a media sponsor to help raise awareness for the event.
Lights Out is a blindfolded wine dinner, where you are dining in the dark. This allows your sense of taste and smell to kick into higher gear, providing you with a heightened dining experience.
Lights Out will take place at Locality Kitchen and Bar on Thursday, September 21. Presented by NonSense, this evening of sensory engagement and taste will delight adventurous diners and heighten more than just your taste buds. The event will raise funds and awareness for Ensight Skills Center, a nonprofit helping clients losing their vision transition to a world without sight. Their goal is to bring awareness to Ensight’s cause, and donate a portion of ticket sales and 100% of silent auction sales.
Ensight Skills Center provides professional low-vision services to enhance the lives of Northern Colorado residents who are struggling with vision loss. They may be losing their eyesight gradually, or have sudden vision loss. Ensight guides their patients through rehabilitation and uses a comprehensive, medical-model approach to ensure the best results. Their mission is to “provide individuals with low vision the opportunity to enhance their life skills, independence, and self confidence in a safe environment through training and adaptive technology”.
At Lights Out, Chef Matt Smith of Locality and wine specialist, Hillary Siebels with BreakThru Beverage have personally designed an outstanding four course menu with wine pairings that will heighten your taste buds with rich and delicate flavors, sounds, smells and textures, and takes into account the physical constraints of eating without sight.
Upon entering Locality, you will be greeted with a glass of champagne provided by Wilbur’s Total Beverage. Attendees can then pop over to the photo booth by Exposure Selfie. You can take a moment and peruse the silent auction donations and place a bid. A mask provided by Edge Optics will be placed over your eyes and you will be guided to your table by a volunteer guide from Ensight.
Chef Smith and his team will deliver each course with a pause to taste, as you won’t know what the ingredients are, and then he will explain the course and his intentions behind it. Siebels will give guided tips for tasting wine and savoring each pairing with the course. The menu is being kept under wraps, but a gluten-friendly and vegetarian option are available. The VIP Experience will feature a separate dining area with an additional course after dessert and special wine pairing, as well as a generously donated goodie bag.
Tickets can be purchased at HiveTheoryCo.com. General tickets are $95 and the VIP experience is $125. VIP tables are available and a portion of the ticket price is tax deductible. Both tickets include a complimentary glass of champagne and a four course dinner paired with wine tastings. Additional glasses of wine and cocktails will be available for purchase.
