When I think of a cupcake, I think of moist, sticky cake topped with a dollop of creamy frosting that melts in your mouth and envelops your taste buds in a blanket of sweetness. I think of smiles, celebration, pleasure and happiness. The world would be a better place if we ate a cupcake everyday. Butter Cream Cupcakery and I are on the same page. Their thoughts on cupcakes? “Like heaven…Only smaller.” Like heaven, indeed.
Butter Cream Cupcakery is a cute little cafe tucked away on the southwest corner of Horse Tooth and College next to Albertson’s. If you weren’t looking for it, sadly, you’d miss it. When they opened in August last year, I was eager to savor (or devour) their gourmet cupcakes. And devour, I did. Butter Cream opened when I was at the end of my pregnancy with my youngest son and let me tell you – chocolate cupcakes are music to a pregnant womans‘ ears. I did not have the easiest pregnancy by any means and my amazing friends would bring me cupcakes from there to cheer me up. It worked! I’m sorry, but I cannot be a grump while eating a cupcake. It goes against the laws of physics.
Not only did Butter Cream satisfy my pregnancy cravings, it was also a special spot that I frequented with my older son because on Thursdays they offer vegan and gluten-free cupcakes. It was a place where we could go and he could have an allergy-free treat that made his day. I’ve had many of their different flavors; their traditional chocolate on chocolate, chocolate on vanilla, vanilla on vanilla, red velvet with cream cheese, french toast, egg nog, candy cane – really, the list could be a mile long. Let’s just say I’ve been able to accurately sample their menu. On a side note, if you let them know what your favorite flavor is, they will call or email you the day before they make it to let you know. How awesome is that?!
I’ve never had a bad cupcake in my life. I just don’t think it’s possible. However, there are average cupcakes and then there are amazing cupcakes. At first, Butter Creams’ cupcakes didn’t live up to my high expectations. They were alright. Some of the cake flavors were a bit dry and crumbled, but the frosting flavors were always good. The only flavor I felt was amazing was their red velvet. That was a mighty tasty cupcake. Moist, sticky and full of heaven…only smaller. I went back again last week and had a completely different experience. Once again I got a few of their traditional flavors and to my surprise, they were much better. Much, much better. My friends who were with me agreed. All of the cakes were now just like the red velvet in texture and consistency. After chatting with their baker and co-owner, Mary DeHerder and co-owner, Robin Pavel, I was told that some of the cake recipes have changed. Good for them, bad for my hips!
As parents with kids-who-love-cupcakes of their own, Butter Cream is very kid-friendly. They have a kids’ corner with a child-sized table and chairs complete with books and a bead maze. They also have a fun “story time with a princess” event where characters such as Sleeping Beauty and Belle read to the kids. The only thing they are lacking is high chairs for the smaller tag-along siblings or infants who are along for the ride with mom who needs an afternoon out.
Butter Cream Cupcakery is a sweet spot for Fort Collins. They offer free wifi if you’d like to grab a coffee and a cupcake (two of the BEST combinations in my opinion) while you do some work. They sell frosting shots if you’re feeling a little indulgent and they also have mini cupcakes if you’re not. They have even expanded their menu and have added pies (Thursday-Sunday). There is something for everyone in this stylish, pink cupcake sanctuary.
